A-Infos (en) - 38 min 16 sec ago
Are we going to make predictions about 2012? Certainly a degree of bravado and bluster is always necessary for someone to step up to the soapbox and preach the bleeding obvious about what is ahead of us, and the anarchist movement is littered with discarded soapboxes. Do we even dare to imagine what responses the deepening crisis will bring? -- We continue to live through an intense period of social transformation, one that is at times chaotic and unpredictable, but one that is also unique and open to all kinds of influences and new expectations. Where does capitalism go now, and what do we do to aid its downfall? Two questions we couldn’t have imagined posing five years ago and here they are, as we take hold of 2012, presenting themselves as real challenges. ...

(en) Anarkismo.net: Mexico, David Venegas Reyes freed! (ca, fr)

A-Infos (en) - 38 min 41 sec ago
Yesterday afternoon (31-2-12), David Venegas Reyes, a member of the Oaxacan collective Oaxaca Voces Oaxaqueñas Construyendo Autonomía y Libertad (VOCAL) was finally freed. According to information supplied by the legal department of Section 22, the release took place without the payment of any bail and without any charges being made since Venegas Reyes was released following confirmation that he had not committed any crime for which he could have been arrested. ---- It should be remembered that the arrest of Venegas Reyes came about in very unclear circumstances while he was accompanying the women's caravan which had begun its return to San Juan Copala. This is thus the beginning of the end for the media and State lynch-mob campaign against those who were accompanying the caravan on its return to San Juan Copala. ...

150 at successful anti-Household Tax meeting in Castlebar

Workers Solidarity Movement (Ireland) - Fri, 02/03/2012 - 17:51

On a chilly 1st February evening, in Fine Gael’s heartland of Castlebar, over 140 people turned out for the first public meeting of the Campaign Against Household and Water Taxes (CAHWT) in Mayo. Although the meeting was scheduled for 7:30, by 7:15 the room in the Welcome Inn was quietly filling up, much to the surprise of those of us who had been there to organise things since 7:00.

Supreme Court to Hear O.P.P. Appeal Against Justice for Levi

Common Cause Ontario - Fri, 02/03/2012 - 14:30

By Zach Ruiter

Justice for Levi is a collation dedicated to the memory of Levi Schaeffer. The coalition had successfully challenged the Ontario Police at the Ontario Superior Court. The court ruled the conduct of police who shot and killed Schaeffer violated the Police Services Act. The Ontario Police have successfully appealed the decision to the Supreme Court of Canada, which is expected to hear the case sometime in December 2012.

The officers in question, Kris Wood and Mark Pullbrook collaborated with police lawyer Andrew McKay to write/fabricate their notes. This allowed the officers to get their stories straight before submitting them to the Special Investigations Unit.

Reflections on the Egyptian Ultras and the Revolution

Anarchist Writers - Fri, 02/03/2012 - 13:43

At the time of writing the wave of outrage over the killing of 73 young football supporters in Port Said on 2 Feb 2012, a year to the day after the Battle of the Camels in Tahrir Square, is still raging around the Interior Ministry in Cairo. Legend has it, that in the early 1970s the then Foreign Minister of Maoist China, Zhou En Lai, was asked what he thought of the French Revolution and replied "it is too early to tell". Certainly the effects of the Egyptian Revolution are far too early to tell. As we enter Year II, the anniversary has been marked by monster demonstrations in Tahrir Square, followed by the provocation of yesterday's massacre.

SOPA & ACTA in the fight against actually existing communism

Workers Solidarity Movement (Ireland) - Fri, 02/03/2012 - 10:27

SOPA & ACTA are the latest attempts by traditional capitalism to reverse a transformation in the exchange of goods that has been escalating over the last couple of decades. In a widely discussed interview in 2005, Bill Gates called the free culture/open source movement "new modern-day sort of communists who want to get rid of the incentive for musicians and movie-makers and software makers under various guises." This outraged many in the movement who were more inclined to identify with the Ayn Randite ultra-free market right than the traditional left, but in fact he had a point. Many failed to see it because 'communism' for almost everyone has come to mean something like the old Soviet Union. But the word means a lot more than that failed top down experiment. Why was Gates right and why is this to be welcomed?
