Sharpening the Pangas?: Understanding and Preventing Future Pogroms
The 2008 Pogroms shattered the illusion among many Leftists – despite numerous early warning signs – that South
Africa’s poor was an essentially undifferentiated class of the righteously angry oppressed. The killing spree left 62 people dead, 670 wounded, more than 100,000 displaced and 35,000 languishing in displacee camps. Although most of the dead were foreigners, 21 were South Africans – demonstrating that all of the victims were seen as “outsiders” in one way or another by those wielding the pangas (machetes). Some of the killers used the unrest as an excuse to settle personal scores; some were driven by ethnic hatred, others by calculated greed. A year ago, in September 2009, I travelled to four townships around Gauteng, three of which had seen pogroms in 2008 (Atteridgeville, Tembisa and Jeppestown) and one of which had not (Soweto), speaking to community activists and to survivors of the 2008 attacks to try and take the temperature at the grassroots regarding “outsiders,” in other words, had the threat of killings receded? After all, for the first week of the 2008 killings, the authorities sat back and cynically watched the damage being done, assessing, perhaps, xenophobia’s usefulness in future as a divideand- rule strategy. The bad news is the ugly fact that many in our townships believe another pogrom is being planned for sometime after the World Cup, now that the world’s eyes are turned elsewhere. So how did the original Pogroms flourish – and how can they be stopped in future?

Troubled tracks as pay claim looms for the underground ---- The triple dispute on London
Underground (LUL) over redundancies, pay and victimisations appears at first sight to have
fizzled out after the initial 48 hour strike back in June. ---- The redundancy issue was
resolved for the time being by a compromise where management have not conceded the
principle of no compulsory redundancies but no RMT member will be made redundant, for now.
The deadline for unions to accept or reject the pay offer has been extended until the
beginning of October, as ASLEF, Unite! and TSSA have asked for more time to consider it.
Activists from these unions have admitted that they had been waiting for the RMT to “punch
itself out” fighting Transport for London (TfL) management on its own, intending to come
in, win the dispute and poach members from it at the last minute.

(en) Ireland, Anarchist Workers Solidarity #117 - Spanish Celebrate 100 Years of Anarchist Trade Unionism
2010 marks the 100th anniversary of the National Confederation of Labour (CNT), a militant
anarchist union in Spain. ---- When General Franco led his fascist revolt in 1936 workers
rose up throughout the country, Where anarchist ideas were popular (as in Catalonia and
Aragon) a social revolution occurred, showing that society could indeed function along
anarchist lines. In hospitals, factories, mills, bus & train services, water &
electricity, the workers of the CNT reorganised and administered production, distribution,
and public services without bosses, managers, or the authority of the state. More than 60%
of agricultural land was collectively cultivated by the peasants themselves, without
landlords, without bosses, and without any ‘need’ for capitalist competition to spur
production. And in keeping with the CNT’s rejection of sexism women played a major part in

Darryl Cherney wants FBI to hand over evidenceNote: Judi Bari and Darryl Cherney were IWW members at the time of these events in 1990. By Kevin Fagan, Staff Writer, San Francisco Chronicle - September 8, 2010; Reproduced in accordance with Fair Use Guidelines. It's an infamous case that never seems to go away, even after millions of dollars have been paid out in civil settlements and police say the trail has gone cold. The case is the 1990 bombing in Oakland of Earth First environmental activists Judi Bari and Darryl Cherney, who were nearly killed when a nail-studded explosive device blew up in their car. Nobody was ever charged with the attack, and now, two decades later, the FBI wants to destroy the last bits of evidence it has been storing ever since the investigation dribbled dry - remnants of the bomb and one like it that blew up in a North Bay town a few days earlier. Not so fast, says Cherney, 54, who has never given up trying to solve the case himself. Saying in court briefs that the evidence "provides the last best hope for learning who bombed Judi Bari," Cherney and his lawyers were in federal court Wednesday in San Francisco to try to force the FBI to turn the evidence over to them so they can run DNA and other tests on it.

Communique of anarchists who attacked Russian embassy in Minsk
From MPST ANHO
On the evening of 30.08.2010 a group of anarchists have attacked by Molotov cocktails Russian embassy in Minsk. One of the diplomat cars was burnt. By this action we express our fury and protest to the arrests and repressions against defenders of Khimki forest in Moscow. While our friends are beaten up by fascist mercenaries, riot police are pressing and arresting innocent people – treats and arrests became everyday routine. Our friends now have to suffer in jails or live in fear to be imprisoned just because they fight for freedom, people and environment. But bureaucrats and capitalists care just for their bribes and profits, they don’t care what happens tomorrow, they are ready to abolish every protest or disagreement with cruelty. What comes next – the death squads?

Riots in LA after recent West Coast police shootings
From Yahoo
LOS ANGELES — Los Angeles riot police arrested 22 protestors and fired rubber bullets in a second night of clashes after a Guatemalan immigrant was shot dead in a confrontation with officers, officials said early Wednesday. Angry mostly Hispanic demonstrators hurled rocks, bottles and eggs at the local police station in the MacArthur Park area near downtown Los Angeles, according to an AFP photographer on the scene. Those arrested were detained on charges including unlawful assembly and failing to disperse after the violence, said Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) officer Karen Rayner. The black-clad riot police fired rubber bullets and non-lethal bean-bags to disperse the crowd. No protestors or police were injured, but one person was struck by a slingshot projectile, according to police.
