World War One and 100 Years of Counter-Revolution

Fri, 08/08/2014 - 10:47
In 1871, Karl Marx wrote that governments use war as a fraud, a ‘humbug, intended to defer the struggle of the classes’. In 1914, that fraud was so effective that not only most workers but also most Marxists supported their respective nation’s rush to war. Ever since then, governments have used war to defer class struggle and prevent revolution. But this strategy cannot last forever.[1]

Racists are rampaging through Israel

Thu, 08/07/2014 - 18:03
In Israel, racism and extremism are exploding. It began shortly after the kidnapping of three Israeli boys—Naftali, Gilad and Eyal—in Gush Etzion, that led to the assault in Gaza which has seen over 1,000 killed. A Facebook page calling for the murder of Palestinians went viral. In one photo, a soldier posed broodingly with his gun, the word "vengeance" written on his chest. In another two teenage girls smiled happily with a banner that read: “Hating Arabs is not racism, it’s values.”

The Oakland Palestine Solidarity Mural

Wed, 08/06/2014 - 21:19
Presented by Art Forces, the Estria Foundation and NorCal Friends of Sabeel, the Oakland Palestine Solidarity Mural is a monumental work of public art located in Uptown Oakland on 26th Street between Telegraph and Broadway. The mural pays homage to the history of Bay Area public art and expresses solidarity with Palestinians as bombs continue to fall on Gaza.

Israel's rank and rotten fruit is being called fascism

Wed, 08/06/2014 - 17:37
The images from Gaza are searing, a gallery of death and horror. A dishevelled Palestinian man cries out in agony, his blood-soaked little brother dead in his arms. On a filthy hospital bed a boy of perhaps five or six screams for his father, his head and body lacerated by shrapnel. A teenage girl lies on a torn stretcher, her limbs awry, her face and torso blackened like a burnt steak. Mourners weep over a family of 18 men, women and children laid side by side in bloodied shrouds. Four boys of a fishing family named Bakr, all less than 12 years old, are killed on a beach by rockets from Israeli aircraft.

Lucien van der Walt: Speech to South African Movements on Politics at a Distance from the State

Wed, 08/06/2014 - 08:58
OVERVIEW: There is a healthy skepticism among many activists about simple grand plans, arising partly from disastrous Marxist experiments like the Soviet Union. But the opposite — faith that struggles spontaneously reach the best outcomes if freed of theory and plans — has serious problems. Many struggles falter or are captured as old mistakes are made again. Capitalism and the state cannot be defeated by a growing wave of loosely linked alternative “spaces” and experiments. These systems are based on coercion and exploitation; their defeat requires large-scale confrontation by a coordinated bottom-up working class counter-power with clear politics. The point of resistance is to change the world: it is not an aim in itself, just a response; a politics fetishising perpetual resistance must rely on a world of oppression. Closing discussion by labeling views “dogmatic” is a recipe for imposing other positions and elites through the backdoor. There is no need to repeat the tragic errors of the past. Other revolutionary theories from working class struggles – like anarchism and syndicalism — share no blame for the failures of vanguardism and reformism, and have valuable insights on building a participatory, transformative, project of “people’s power,” and on moving from resistance to reconstruction. It is important to speak openly about theory, strategy and vision, and to engage openly with the revolutionary traditions of the popular classes, like anarchism and syndicalism, born of our past struggles, and distilled from those struggles.

The war to end all wars

Wed, 08/06/2014 - 05:34
One hundred years ago today, Germany declared war on Belgium and Britain declared war on Germany. Starting with the assassination of an Archduke in Sarajevo on 28 June, an escalating series of mobilisations and declarations over five weeks ended up being the first truly World War.

Palestine-Israel, The joint struggle in turbulent times*

Sun, 08/03/2014 - 09:09
The joint struggles in the locations of regular weekly activities of Bil'in, Ni'lin, Ma'sara, Sheikh Jarrah, Nabi Saleh, Qaddum, Western Hills of Hebron, in the weekend actions and some in between, have focused on the war on Gaza as the more obvious aspect of the occupation. Today, it seems Israel has failed to establish a weakened but independent power in the Gaza Strip - mainly because the atrocities by Israel have failed to recruit international pressure on Egypt to open the siege of Gaza enough. It seems there will be a revival of the accord between Hamas and the West Bank Palestinian Authority that Israel has invested so much effort into sabotaging. It is not clear yet what the the details will be and how the latest Israeli atrocities will influence pressure from the imperial powers on Israel to end the 1967 occupation. Latest news: Israel has started to retreat its forces from the Gaza Strip with no resolution and with rockets still being fired on Israel. [http://www.anarkismo.net/article/27234]

Israel burned the stew

Fri, 08/01/2014 - 12:12
The present Gaza war was started before the actual shooting, by Egypt's blockade of the Gaza Strip, intended to break the rule of Hamas due to it being a part of the Islamic Brotherhood movement. [http://www.anarkismo.net/article/27222] [http://www.anarkismo.net/article/27286]

We must end this collusion with terror in Colombia

Israel/Palestine: Background to the present conflict

Sun, 07/27/2014 - 09:26
Egypt insists on dissolving the rule of the Muslim Brotherhood offshoot, Hamas, in the Gaza Strip. Israel "just" wants to sabotage the yielding/compromise by Hamas to the Palestinian West Bank Authority. The relevant political context for the present round begins in November 2012, with the agreement between Israel and Hamas under Egyptian sponsorship. Palestine-Israel: In the Beitunia murder, the joint struggle again highlights the most important aspect of Israeli involvement in it.*

Wed, 05/28/2014 - 09:47
Araqeeb, Bil'in, Beitunia, Ma'sarah, Nabi Saleh, Ni'lin, Qaddum, Sheikh Jarrah, Tel-Aviv/Jaffa
Many objections were raised about the participation of Israelis in the non-armed struggle in the areas of Palestine occupied in the 1967 war. Some, mostly Palestinians, regarded it as a contribution to so called "normalization". Others claimed that Israeli activists should do their struggle within the Israeli population of the 1948 borders. Many anarchists raised reservations as the Palestinian popular struggle is a kind of capitalist "national independence struggle" for the self-determination of the Palestinian capitalist elite to monopolize the option for the exploitation of the Palestinian working masses - they just ignore the fact that most Palestinians wish for a bi-national democratic whole Palestine and not for a national Palestinian State. Others just do not take upon themselves the obligation to serve as a life-saving shield, as Israeli policy officially forbids the state forces to shoot to kill when Israelis are supposed to be among the demonstrators. Indigenous people struggle against settler colonialist transfer and marginalization is NOT the same as a national Bourgeoisie for "national independence" or "national self-determination".

Ahdut position paper about the Palestinian struggle

Wed, 05/21/2014 - 08:21
Adopted on 25 April 2014 by the members of the anarcho-communist organization, Ahdut (Unity), active in Palestine/Israel
The Zionist colonization project, sponsored by the imperialist powers and at their service, has subjugated Palestine; it has persistently made every effort to displace the indigenous masses out of the area ruled by it, or at least to concentrate them in confined enclaves. A section of the Palestinian people evaded the efforts to expel them and became citizens of Israel, suffering discrimination by law and customary practice. The State of Israel persists in measures aimed at dispossessing them. Lately these measures are focused on the Prawer Plan for the Negev, which evokes the 1970s plan of Judaizing the Galilee, and the events of Land Day (30 March 1976). Another section of the Palestinian people, in the territories occupied in 1967, live for the most part under military rule. The Israeli military authorities have much greater freedom of action in displacing the Palestinians or concentrating them in enclaves than is possible inside Israeli sovereign territory. As well as gradually seizing most of the Palestinians’ land, Israel obstructs their individual and collective economic development; denies their freedom of movement, assembly and speech; and suppresses by various means their resistance to the ongoing colonization and occupation. Palestine-Israel, The joint struggle activists insist in the efforts to change the world*

Mon, 05/19/2014 - 10:02
Week after week, on weekend and in the week-days to anarchists and other activists insist of leaning our Shoulders on the wheels of history that revolve too slow and push them as much as we can. There is not much of energy in the masses and many activists lost the urge to participate, but still many of us persist and join the meager efforts of the Palestinians who resist the advancing transfer efforts of the Israeli Zionist project and its state forces. The international solidarity activists who join us bring with them the echoes of world wide expanding support and the message that our struggle contribute a lot to it. The frustrated Israeli state forces continue their murderous efforts to extinguish the popular struggle adding live ammunition from time to time like the last week at the demo in Bitunia (near the Ofer concentration camp) but retreat under mounting international pressure. Anarchism in the context of civil war

Sun, 05/11/2014 - 15:49
The events at the House of Trade Unions in Odessa are a tragedy, and it is possible, that among those who died there were also people who played no part in flaring up the violence. People who threw molotov cocktails at the House should have understood the consequences. Even if the fire igniting was not solely due to them, it is not for lack of trying. In case civil war spreads, these deaths are just the beginning. No doubt that on both sides the majority only wants a better life for their close ones and their motherland, and many hate governments and oligarchs to an equal extent. The more sincerely naïve people die, the greater the pressure to support one of the factions in the war, and we must struggle against this pressure. Statement from NYC Local of Black Rose Anarchist Federation regarding Cecily McMillan

Sun, 05/11/2014 - 00:09
We stand in solidarity with Cecily McMillan and will in the future. Cecily has been punished in order to make an example out of the Occupy movement. At the same time we must look at the bigger picture. By the end of today, another life, activist or not, will have been snuffed out by state violence. These include attacks against active militants involved in the struggle for liberation of oppressed peoples like Mumia Abu-Jamal, Maroon Shoatz and Leonard Peltier, as well as everyday people of color and undocumented migrants struggling to survive against the racist class divisions perpetuated by capitalism. There have been 239 people killed by the NYPD since Amadou Diallo in 1999, and 107 since Sean Bell in 2010; nearly all of them have been people of color. While we see that Cecily is a political prisoner, we recognize that the black and brown men and women who are systematically beaten on the street and thrown into prisons are political by default. Having historically been the most exploited of the exploited class, their well-being, survival and resistance to the widening gap between classes poses a threat to the capitalist status quo that the state seeks to insure.
